Street Rhythms Committee

Street Rhythms Committee

Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Fest started up in 2008 and is a wonderful street dance festival for the middle weekend of August each year. This brand new festival for Enniscorthy has the aim of including all age groups from 2 to 102 and bringing a sense of community and joy to the town. All cultures and community groups, families including children, parents and grandparents, uncles and aunts, young and not so young are included in a bright new venture for Enniscorthy. The ambition is to provide something for everyone over this weekend including many different dance types, a big and brash parade, fireworks, drum and dance workshops and dances galore to suit all tastes.

Street Rhythms Dance Fest was the dream child of a few enthusiastic local visionaries who were looking at Enniscorthy from Vinegar Hill and had the idea of creating a happy and colourful festival for the town through dance. The many dance acts both national and international will bring colour and an electric atmosphere to the streets. Dance workshops for participants and visitors will bring another dimension to the town. The streets will be decorated with bunting, flags and flowers to bring colour and atmosphere with street performers adding to the atmosphere and providing a lively backdrop to the event.

There will be many performers at the various venues all day where the public can view and interact with them easily. We will be trying to encourage as many as possible to participate and join in the fun either with the performers on the street or through workshops at various locations. Dance venues will be spread out over the town to include everyone. We will have live dancing performances on stage at Market Square, the Farmers Market in Abbey Square and the Fair Green.

“Dance is a way of rising up into space, of discovering new dimensions while still remaining in touch with your body. When you dance, the spiritual world and the real world manage to coexist quite happily. I think classical dancers dance on pointes because they’re simultaneously touching the earth and reaching up to the skies.”
- From The Witch of Portobello by Paulo Coelho, Brazilian Novelist

  • About Enniscorthy

Enniscorthy is a picturesque town situated on the N11 at the river slaney in Co. Wexford. Enniscorthy is a Anglicised version of the Irish (Inis Córthaidh, meaning Island of the rocks).

    Vinegar Hill

It has a rich historical background, most notably it was the location of a major battle in 1798 which took place on Vinegar Hill (Cnoc Fíodh na gCaor in Irish which translates as hill of the berry-tree). was the largest camp and headquarters of the rebels of 1798 who controlled County Wexford for thirty days against vastly superior forces, before their defeat on June 21. From Vinegar Hill you can see the Blackstairs mountains, which are situated along the west border of County Wexford.

    Enniscorthy Castle

Enniscorthy Castle is an imposing Norman stronghold, which dates from 1205 and was a private dwelling until 1951. The castle was the site of many fierce battles during the Cromwellian years and also the 1798 Rising. The castle houses the Wexford County Museum, which contains extensive 1798 rebellion-related material, as well as items of local and agricultural interest. It is currently (2008) closed for refurbishment and is scheduled to reopen in 2010.

    1798 Centre

One of the most noted interactive museums in Ireland, the 1798 Visitor Centre is devoted to the 1798 Rising. You can visit their website here.

    Enniscorthy Cathedral

One of Enniscorthy’s most popular attractions, built in 1843, is St. Aidan’s Cathedral. It was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin who also designed the interior of London’s Houses of Parliament. Pugin created the cathedral in the same Neogothic style.
